When it comes to taking the works of Shakespeare to a whole new level, Vancouver’s uber-popular Bard on the Beach Festival is hard to beat.

Each year the festival grabs Shakespeare by the scruff of his neck and celebrates some of his finest works in a magnificent location: Vancouver’s Vanier Park.

There’s nothing quite like huddling into the iconic Bard on the Beach tent and watching magic unfold on stage as the beautiful backdrop of Vanier Park’s beach soaks into the very essence of the Bard’s poetry. Yes, nothing gives you the goosebumps quite as much as listening to Shakespeare’s rhythmic poetry as an eagle glides above or – and this did happen to me once – a thunder and lightning storm erupts.

I’m pretty sure old Will would have approved.

This year marks the Bard’s 28th return to the beach, and the jam-packed season of theatrical treats is running from June 1 to September 23.

The line-up is set to take today’s audiences from the Renaissance to modern-day Venice and today’s Vancouver.

Opening the Festival on the BMO Mainstage is a new production of an audience favourite, Much Ado About Nothing, set in 1959 Italy and inspired by the era’s extravagant Italian films. Alternating with Much Ado is The Winter’s Tale, a magical and poignant family drama set in Sicily and Bohemia.

On the Howard Family Stage you can catch a provocative new staging of The Merchant of Venice that’s set in contemporary Italy. The Merchant will alternate with a fabulous new production of The Two Gentlemen of Verona.

The Landis Hotel & Suites is perfectly located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, with easy access to Vanier Park for visiting thespians. Each suite features excellent downtown views, two bedrooms, a fully-equipped kitchen and separate living and dining areas. The property is within walking distance of Vancouver’s top tourist destinations, such as Stanley Park, Vancouver Art Gallery, historic Gastown and hip Yaletown.
