No visit to Vancouver is complete without a trip to the atmospheric brick-paved streets of Gastown, the city’s oldest neighbourhood.

Now a National Historic Site of Canada, Gastown is where you’ll find the very roots of this magnificent city. It’s named after John ‘Gassy Jack’ Deighton, who arrived in Gastown with a barrel of whisky in 1867 and promptly built a saloon for the local sawmill workers.

Today the area is brimming over with cool designer boutiques, stylish eateries and hip bars to explore. So come with us while we share with you how to shop, eat and drink – Gastown style.

SHOP GASTOWN

Gastown is the proud home of some of the city’s most exciting independent boutiques. From uber-hip footwear in Fleuvog Shoes to hipster-tastic finds at Old Faithful, Gastown is the epitome of Vancouver style. Add a dash of First Nations’ artisan outlets boasting some truly beautiful authentic pieces and a plethora of souvenir shops (moose-dropping chocolate, anyone?) and it’s easy to see why Gastown is such a big hit with shopaholics from across the globe.

EAT GASTOWN

Gastown has languished at the heart of Vancouver’s culinary scene for decades. If time isn’t an issue, it’s one of those great places to take an evening stroll and sample a different course in a different restaurant. Why not sample the beef tartare in L’Abattoir, John Dory with parmesan fritters at Bauhaus, and strawberry and rhubarb crème brulee at Pourhouse? Yes? Okay, see you there!

DRINK GASTOWN

Hipsters and bar-hoppers alike flock to rub shoulders in Gastown’s many hostelries. Cosy up with a pint of the black stuff in the Irish Heather, sample some house brews in Steamworks, check out the live bands in the Lamplighter and dance late into the evening at the Blarney Stone.

Landis Hotel & Suites is perfectly located in the heart of downtown Vancouver – making it extra easy to explore the gorgeous Gastown district. The hotel even has a complimentary downtown drop-off shuttle bus. Just talk to the friendly staff at the front desk and they’ll happily arrange a free ride to Gastown for you!
