VANCOUVER OPERA FESTIVAL
Running from April 28 to May 6, the Vancouver Opera Festival is here to show how Opera remains a vital and provocative art form that can move audiences to this day.
This is the second annual Opera Festival, hot off last year’s inaugural showing which boasted sold out concert halls and unbelievable performances – it’s an instant tradition!
This year’s theme centers on the maestro composers of Russian operas. Check out these shows!
A production of Tchaikovsky’s timeless opera, this massive production features the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Russian baritone Konstantin Shushakov in the title role. A timeless tale of fickle love and heartbreak, this moving piece is a classic for a reason. Takes place at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
A musical adaptation of Gogol’s beloved story, The Overcoat follows the hopes and dreams of an impoverished bureaucrat who dreams of replacing his threadbare overcoat with a splendid new one, and the way this dream transforms his life. A collaboration between playwrights Morris Panych and Wendy Gorling and award-winning composer James Rolfe, this classic Russian tale is given new life on the stage. The Overcoat will be performed at Vancouver Playhouse.
REQUIEM FOR A LOST GIRL
A chamber musical collaboration written and directed by Onalea Gilbertson and composed by Marcel Bergmann, this powerful piece examines the sorrow of homelessness and the social realities of missing and murdered women in a devastatingly powerful piece. Shows at SFU Woodward’s Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre.
Throughout the festival, there will be chamber performances of works of renowned Russian composers at various venues, including tributes to Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich.
